Lastly, you may want to ask your parents about what internet speeds you are supposed to be getting, and run a speed test the next time you are home alone for comparison. I perform this check on my own computer a few times a year, and it makes a very noticeable impact on its performance. Most of the time, I recommend going into the program itself to stop it, stop it from starting up when you first boot up your computer, or uninstalling it. If you decide to end the tasks right then and there using the “stop process” button, then please be careful a lot of those processes are important for Windows to run properly, even if you don’t recognize them. Once you’re there, look through the various tabs to see a list of what programs and processes are using your computer’s resources. Some newer versions of windows also let you open task manager by right clicking the start menu and selecting it from a menu. All you need to do is press and hold “ctrl+alt+delete” and select “open task manager.

Since most gamers use Windows, I’ll share the instructions for how to open task manager on all recent versions.

Programs that are running when they shouldn’t be can not only increase your ping by using your network while you’re trying to do something else, but can also use up CPU and even GPU cycles, which will reduce the performance of even offline games. Even without a high ping, I would strongly recommend opening your task manager to check to see what’s running on your computer. The other possibility is that something is running on your computer. Even if you’re sure your cable is up to date, it may have been damaged if anyone stepped on it accidently.
Cat5 cables are significantly less reliable over long distances, which can cause issues like high ping. The current standard for Ethernet cables is Cat6, while a lot of old Ethernet cables are Cat5.

If only your hard-wired PC is having this issue, you may need to upgrade or replace your Ethernet cable. I recently had to optimize my own home internet connection for similar reasons, so I would be happy to share what I learned while I was working on fixing my own connection. Hello certainly understand how devastating even a bit of ping can be, especially in high-pressure online games like League of Legends. If any of you have any ideas on how to fix this, please please let me know. I dont know if i should just try and get a techie down here or if i should try something you guys eventually suggest. The ping spikes are hard to isolate because they happen at random times, so its hard to find out when they will happen. I dont know if there is anything i can do on my end. They came out of nowhere a couple months ago, happen randomly at random times, and stay around for random times. I dont know our actual U-verse plan because im not the adult of the house, im just the teenage kiddo trying to fix our internet.Īll in all, i have no clue why these ping spikes happen.

We have decent internet, says 9.55mbps download and 1.87mbps upload. I dont think the many devices is the problem though, because i have gotten the ping spikes when i was home alone and none of the other devices were running other than maybe the TV. We live in a house of 5 people including myself, and most of the time we are all home, and the spikes happen roughly once a day. My PC is connected to the ethernet like it should be, but everything else is WiFi.

We have many devices connected to the internet, 3 phones, 2 android tablets, an xbox, we have 2 TV's, and my PC. Its starting to get unbearable because LoL becomes unplayable at high pings, and R6 Siege just kicks you after 15 seconds if your ping is over ~300ms. I know this isn't just a bad connection with the game, because it happens in multiple games and Discord takes a hit when the spikes like to come, along with Chrome and other stuff. The ping either stays for a while, max is like 5 mins, is randomly short and only a couple seconds, or is just a line of spikes(30ms to 500ms to 40ms to 1000ms to 60ms to 700ms to 30ms etc). I would randomly get upwards of 1000+ms, making the games i play unplayable and Discord basically unusable. The problem i have been having for i think a couple months(i have been living with this for a while, but its really starting to get on my nerves now), is my ping randomly spikes out of nowhere and it for seemingly no reason. I am a pretty big gamer, i normally play games like League of Legends and Rainbow Six: Siege on the PC, games that rely heavily on a good connection. So i have ATT U-Verse and the router i am using is the Motorola NVG589.
